January climate stats

Looks like January was sort of an average month. Rainfall, though it felt much higher, was actually below the LTA. The temperature was exactly average. The solar radiation was well above average which gave us good results for our new solar PV array.

What was not average was the days of fierce winds. Met Eireann doesn't really report wind as part of the climate tracking. Perhaps they should start.

Notes on the Data

Evaporation and PE data are calculated using Penman/Monteith formulae.
The ‘LTA’ (referred to within a table) is average for the climatological long-term-average (LTA) reference period 1981-2010.
Data updated daily at Mid-day.

Beaurocraptic nonsense

Any wine being distributed in the European Union (EU) produced after 8 December 2023 must have an ingredient label. The new legislation requires the ingredients to be listed in the languages of the countries to which the wine is shipped. The EU has allowed a QR code to be inserted on the label. The wine has to be tested by a certified lab. Only ingredients actually added to the wine must be specified, not those that were used in making the wine but later removed before the wine was bottled.

American wineries dealing with new wine labeling requirements for wine exports to be sold in the EU got expert advice from panelists at the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium in Sacramento on a panel entitled “Prepping for Nutrient and Ingredient Labeling.”

So do winemakers have to break down the percentage of each grape varietal or identify the chemicals that make up the wine? If we don't add anything, do we just say Ingredients: wine?

Happy St Brigid's Day
