Donkeys on walkabout

Today's post is not really about the vineyard, but rather about our cheeky donkeys.

We got a call yesterday morning that 5 donkeys were spotted trotting down the road and turned left at the crossroads. Alex ran up to the shed and found a gate wide open. Our cheeky houdinis opened the gate and went walkabout.

Alex and I got a bucket of feed and drove to the crossroad several km away. He was going to head them off by driving around from the next crossroads, and I would walk down the road to meet them. But there were no donkeys.

So we started walking up driveways. There they were, in a farmyard with lots of sheep and cattle in a barn. The farmer and his friend blocked them in with their cars. Phew! I think they were genuinely happy to see me and came running to me. Of course, Alex says it was the bucket that attracted them.

The kind farmer got his large transport box, and we manoeuvred the donkeys into it without a problem. It was interesting to watch the farmer work. Experience matters. They are safely back in their shed. The shed was full of adult animals and babies. Usually, they go out in the fields as soon as they can walk, but the fields are too wet, so they have to stay inside. Cute baby lambs.

We later discovered that they didn't just escape right away; they opened the gate, walked around the vineyard, then walked through the orchard and gardens and across the avenue, leaving hoof prints and poop to mark their trail. They checked out the entire property before heading off for more adventure. Amazingly, they did not trample anything or munch on the vines.

🫏🫏🫏🫏🫏 So much excitement first thing in the morning!

Alex spent the entire rest of the day filling in holes and collecting donkey poop. There are still lots more holes to fill.
