Westernmost vineyard in Europe

Casal Santa Maria vineyards in Portugal

We wanted to claim the title of the westernmost vineyard in Europe given that we're the only vineyard we know of on the west coast of Ireland or Scotland. But we were recently reminded that the Azores are part of Europe and so are the Madeiras. There goes that claim. Their vino verde and fortified port and Madeira wines qualify for that claim. Oh well. We'll find another accolade to usurp. Perhaps Westernmost Vineyard in Continental Europe?

Meanwhile, while researching westernmost vineyards in Europe, I came upon a charming story about a Russian baron who came to Portugal to die, only to thrive to the age of 105 while establishing vineyards and sipping wines at his estate, the Quinta or farm Casal Santa Maria in Colares near Sintra. We visited Sintra this summer while sailing in Portugal. Had we known the story of Baron Bodo Von Bruemmer, we would have stopped at Casal Santa Maria, only 2 km from Cabo de Roca - the westernmost point in continental Europe which we also visited. I hope they kept the pendulum which he used to make decisions about his vineyards.

I am really enthused by the Baron's story. Thanks dear Baron. Now I have start crafting our own narrative. I'd better get to work.
